been forced to pull the chestnuts out of the fire by the cowardly

British.

Kriegs Bilder was well get up and devoted itself to

relating the atrocities committed by Cossacks upon German pessante and in showing pictures of kindly Prussian Officers playing with

Belgian children.

Kriegs Bilder had a small circulation and wasted much of its space in oursing British Censors.

The papers in Inglish were all without exception be- neath contempt. The War, which at one time was Gilbert Read's Journal was very dreary and was read by few except British CensoTE, The Tientsin Sunday Journal was suppressed and its editor, Berioni, a first class blackguard was deported by the Italian Minister. The Peking Post, soon became discredited. This was the paper which invented the story that the French had trained their "Tirailleurs Senegaleses" to eat Gerom prisoners and that they then found difficulty in feeding them, for the "Tirailleurs" had got so accus- -tomed to the flavour of well fed German flesh that they declined to eat anything else and the French could not cat sufficient prisoners for their maintenance. This paper also had a series of leaders on the subject of Miss Cavell, in which she was contrasted with Judas Iscariot, who was made to appear a most blameless persons compared

to Miss Cavell.

The Amoy and Hankow papers appeared only for a short time and had no effect at all. Of the Chinese papers, by far the most important was the "Huich Ho Pe". It was well got up and there was nothing externally to shew that it was a German paper. It pro- -fessed to be quite impartial and neutral. This paper was stopped by British Censors pending further investigations, and the Germans with their usual belief in the imbecility of everyone else then proceeded to send out the monthly bills to the readers of the "Heich Ho Po*. These were made out in Chinese but they all bore the heading"33
